Ed Shultz discusses the Postal Service and the “War on Workers”

Last night, MSNBC’s Ed Shultz discussed Congress’ plan to dismantle the USPS. Hundreds of thousands of jobs are on the line, and instead of finding practical solutions to fix the Postal Service’s financial problems, members of the House and Senate want to destroy jobs and ultimately privatize the USPS, said Shultz.

Yesterday, the Senate voted 74 to 22 to proceed with debate on S. 1789. According to Shultz, S. 1789 will just “postpone the agony” and is just a bunch of “mumbo jumbo.” Shultz reiterates the reasons why members of the House and Senate are targeting the USPS: to kill unions, go after working Americans and privatize the USPS.

The Senate will debate the future of the USPS this week. Instead of eliminating thousands of middle class jobs, Congress needs to end the requirement to pre-fund future retiree health benefits and give the USPS an opportunity to innovate. Congress needs to pass a bill that allows USPS to thrive in the 21st century while maintaining essential, affordable and reliable service for the American people.
